The Compound Semiconductor Applications (CSA) Catapult required a new innovation centre to support cutting-edge research, testing and development in compound semiconductor technologies. The facility needed to create a collaborative environment for innovation while accommodating a wide range of specialist laboratory spaces, an ISO 7 cleanroom and modern Grade A office accommodation.

The project involved transforming an existing shell into approximately 1,000m² of cleanroom and laboratory space alongside 1,500m² of offices, all within a demanding fast-track programme. Early occupation of the office areas was a key requirement, with the facility designed to support future advancements in technologies including autonomous vehicles, 5G communications, renewable energy and the Internet of Things (IoT).

The Solution

We delivered a fully integrated turnkey solution, taking the project from developed design through construction, commissioning, validation and user occupation. Working closely with CSA Catapult, we undertook early planning workshops and constructability reviews to optimise the programme, reduce project risk and accelerate delivery.

Our multidisciplinary design and construction teams developed and delivered a highly specialised facility incorporating an ISO 7 cleanroom and a range of semiconductor laboratories, including photonics, power electronics, radio frequency, advanced packaging, evaluation and high-power testing environments. By combining specialist cleanroom construction expertise with innovative project sequencing and delivery methodologies, we successfully met the programme requirements while maintaining the high standards required for advanced research and semiconductor manufacturing.
