The project combined production and assembly in one new single plant and is part of a £50 million investment at the Glasgow HQ and manufacturing site of the UK subsidiary of Tokyo’s Terumo Corporation.

Client Brief

Terumo Aortic, a global medical device manufacturer specialising in aortic and vascular therapies, required a new 2,400m² manufacturing facility at its Glasgow headquarters as part of a £50 million investment programme. The facility needed to support increasing demand within the global surgical grafts market and accommodate new production equipment through the delivery of two cGMP cleanrooms, a sterilisation suite and associated manufacturing support areas.

Alongside meeting stringent regulatory requirements, the project needed to support Terumo's long-term sustainability ambitions, incorporate low-carbon technologies and provide the flexibility to accommodate future manufacturing and technology developments.

The Solution

We delivered a fully integrated design and build solution, providing architectural, process and M&E design before undertaking the construction and delivery of the facility. Working closely with Terumo Aortic, we developed a cGMP-compliant cleanroom manufacturing environment that seamlessly integrated specialist production and sterilisation equipment while supporting future operational growth.

A key element of the project was the use of Norwood's modular cleanroom construction systems. Specialist cleanroom partitions, ceilings, doors and vision panels were incorporated throughout the facility to create hygienic, compliant and adaptable cleanroom environments. Designed specifically for pharmaceutical and medical device cleanroom applications, the system provides flush surfaces compatible with rigorous cleaning regimes while enabling the efficient integration of power, data and utility services.

The cleanroom facility was constructed using modular principles and off-site manufactured components, improving programme certainty, reducing waste and supporting sustainability objectives. Bespoke integrated double-stack dado systems were also incorporated to provide flexible routing of services throughout the cleanroom environment.

Together with low-carbon technologies and renewable energy initiatives, the completed facility provides Terumo Aortic with a future-ready manufacturing and cleanroom facility that supports increased production capacity, operational flexibility and long-term sustainability goals.
