The University of Cambridge required specialist cleanroom, laboratory and innovation spaces for the new Ray Dolby Centre, a landmark facility that brings together the University's world-leading research expertise with private sector innovation projects.

Client Brief

Designed to support advanced scientific research and collaborative development, the facility needed highly flexible cleanroom environments capable of adapting to future occupier requirements while maintaining the highest standards of performance, safety and compliance.

The project also called for specialist architectural features, including a striking fire-rated glazed wall that would provide visibility into the cleanroom spaces from the central atrium, alongside infrastructure designed to simplify ongoing maintenance and future technology upgrades.

The Solution

We designed, manufactured and installed a range of specialist cleanroom and architectural systems to support the facility's long-term operational requirements. Our scope included over 4,000m² of cleanroom partitioning, a 2,500m² walk-on ceiling system and a bespoke 2.85m-high fire-rated glazed wall providing 60 minutes of fire integrity and insulation.

To support future flexibility, we developed a bespoke version of our modular cleanroom partitioning system, incorporating a unique fixing arrangement that enables spaces to be easily adapted and reconfigured as research activities evolve. The walk-on ceiling system was designed to provide safe access for maintenance while minimising disruption to operational areas.

The completed solution combines high-performance cleanroom construction with architectural excellence, delivering a flexible, future-ready research environment that supports innovation, collaboration and scientific discovery.
