The ultimate phase of a new-build and refurbishment warehousing and logistics project for AstraZeneca was the design, installation and commissioning of a state-of-the-art 8000m2 packing facility. All delivered to the client’s critical success factors including zero disruption to ‘Business as Usual’.

Client Brief

AstraZeneca required the design and delivery of a new 8,000m² Global Packing Centre as part of a wider warehousing and logistics development programme. The facility was designed to accommodate nine Grade D primary packing cells, a secondary packing area, wash bay, tool store and associated office accommodation.

Each packing cell required stringent temperature, humidity and pressure control to support the primary packing of pharmaceutical products within a clean, contamination-controlled environment. A critical project requirement was that all works be delivered without disrupting ongoing operations, ensuring zero impact on business-as-usual activities across the live manufacturing site.

The Solution

We delivered a fully integrated turnkey solution, taking the project from design through construction, installation, commissioning and validation. Working closely with AstraZeneca, we developed a GMP-compliant facility capable of supporting complex pharmaceutical packing operations while maintaining operational continuity throughout the project.

To achieve the required environmental conditions, we engineered sophisticated air pressure regimes throughout the facility to control microbial and particulate contamination and prevent cross-contamination between processing areas. Airlocks were incorporated throughout the design, while a complex HVAC system, comprising primary and secondary air handling units and modular service distribution systems, was installed to provide precise temperature, humidity and pressure control within each packing environment.

A key element of the project was the integration of Norwood's specialist cleanroom construction systems. Modular partitioning, flush coving, ceiling systems and associated cleanroom components were incorporated throughout the facility, creating robust, compliant and adaptable packing environments that support both operational performance and long-term flexibility.

The completed Global Packing Centre was delivered safely, to programme and budget, providing AstraZeneca with a modern, future-ready pharmaceutical packing facility with no unplanned interruption to ongoing site operations.
