M Group has safely demolished two deteriorating concrete footbridges over the M5 motorway in Gloucestershire, and we’re delighted our teams completed the project nine hours ahead of schedule.
National Highways commissioned M Group as principal contractor responsible for the planning of the demolition project, the health and safety of everyone on site and environmental considerations.
A section of the motorway was closed to protect the safety of the public and M Group’s teams, and to provide the most efficient, cost-effective solution. More than 60,000 vehicles a day were diverted onto local roads, and both bridges were demolished simultaneously to reduce the motorway closure time.
All steel and concrete from the bridges will be recycled and a modern steel structure will replace the bridges in the coming years.
Chris Regan, Regional Director - South West, National Highways said: “The successful completion of the works, and the reopening of the M5 significantly ahead of programme, is a remarkable accomplishment that reflects the highest standards of delivery. The planning, leadership, control and oversight demonstrated throughout the project were exemplary.
“This project stands as an excellent example of collaborative working and demonstrates the value of bringing together the expertise, experience and commitment of everyone involved.”
