M Group’s water team has completed an important upgrade for Scottish Water, at Upperton Wastewater Treatment Works.
The project was driven by the need to improve ammonia performance and support Scottish Water’s regulatory commitment to Water Framework Directive objectives.
At the heart of the upgrade are two new aerated reed beds, constructed following the removal of two sand filter beds that had reached the end of their asset life. By continuously injecting oxygen, aerated reed beds enhance the performance of traditional constructed wetlands. The technology can increase treatment capacity by up to 15 times, while reducing the required land footprint by up to two thirds.
Through close collaboration with Scottish Water, Colloide, ARM, BGEN and wider delivery partners, the aerated reed beds and a new sodium bicarbonate dosing system are now in operation.
The project leaves a positive legacy beyond operational improvements, with upgrades made to the private access road providing a tangible benefit for the local community.
