A leading pharmaceutical manufacturer required the refurbishment of an existing facility to create a new Quality Assurance (QA) laboratory, sterility testing laboratory and supporting write-up areas.
Client Brief
Located within the heart of a busy manufacturing site, the facility was designed to support critical microbiological testing and analytical activities for the next 25 years.
The project required a full turnkey refurbishment, including demolition, asbestos removal, civil and structural works, architectural fit-out, HVAC and electrical services. All works needed to be completed with minimal disruption to ongoing production and testing activities while achieving compliance with current Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) standards.
The Solution
Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, we delivered a fully integrated design and refurbishment solution from initial design coordination through to construction, commissioning and validation. Early involvement in the design process enabled us to review and optimise the proposed layouts, construction sequencing and product selection to improve functionality, programme certainty and operational efficiency.
Using a fully coordinated BIM model, potential clashes and installation challenges were resolved before construction commenced, supporting efficient delivery within the constraints of the live manufacturing environment. Careful planning and site management ensured all works were undertaken with minimal impact on ongoing production and laboratory operations.
The facility was constructed using Norwood's specialist cleanroom partitioning systems and laboratory finishes, creating a modern, energy-efficient environment tailored to the client's testing requirements. A key feature of the project was the incorporation of automatic hermetically sealing sliding doors with large vision panels, improving workflow, maximising usable space and creating a more open and user-friendly laboratory environment.
The completed facility was successfully commissioned and validated, providing a high-quality GLP-compliant laboratory designed to support the client's analytical and sterility testing requirements for years to come.
