Working with Surrey County Council, M Group was contracted to replace the existing High Intensity Discharge (HID) Lighting units and Compact Fluorescent lighting with modern LED units. LED lighting uses 30-40% less energy than traditional streetlights, lasting longer and reducing maintenance costs.

Across the network in Surrey, there were over 89,000 lanterns that required converting.

Our Street Lighting team commenced work in 2020. As part of our commitment to create innovative solutions for our clients, we introduced a bespoke gear tray, consisting of the key electrical components for 65,000 Philips Libre style lanterns. This allowed existing street lighting lanterns to be reused meaning a huge reduction in waste materials.

Completed in 2025, the LED roll out delivered a 65% reduction in energy usage across the network, reducing carbon emissions. This equates to a 16 million KW/Hr saving in energy. The LED lighting also improved visibility for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists, while reducing light pollution into surrounding homes and gardens.
