We installed four EV chargers to service eight bays in the Pompey centre car park in Portsmouth on behalf of client SSE. We also installed a 1.5MVa package substation to support the chargers.

We were the principal contractor for the project, procured under a NEC3 framework contract with SSE.
As part of the project, we worked to:

  • Installation of substation enclosure, 1500kVA 11kV Ground Mounted Transformer, Transformer Mounted Ring Main Unit (close coupled and pre-assembled), Transformer Mounted LV pillar including protection and Remote Terminal Unit (RTU)
  • Installation of 3 No Raption 150kW EV Charge points and 1 No evolve 22kW charge point with and associated civils works, including plinths, ductwork and infrastructure for expansion for a further 2 chargers to be installed.
  • Installation testing and commissioning of All HV and LV Cabling works associated with the EV chargers and HV substation works and connection to the DNO network.
  • Installation of lighting bollards and associated civils works, including plinths, ductwork and cabling.
  • Installation of CCTV, site signage and lighting.
  • Installation of impact protection bollards for each EV charging bay.
  • All reinstatement, tree planting and landscaping works.

Through the construction stage, our team had to overcome several challenges. The point of connection (POV) for the HV cable wasn’t in the location identified by the DNO. Our experienced installation team were able to quickly identify the best location for the POC.
We then safely closed and reinstated the original location and excavated, making a safe and secure new location in agreement with the client and DNO.
Working in a busy public car park, within a retail park, our site set up made sure we had a safe and secure working area to protect our operatives and members of the public during the works, with daily onsite supervision and perimeter inspections check to make sure this was maintained.
We had a regular communication with the site operator and the retail units to ensure they were kept up to date with the works and key dates for large deliveries.

The chargers were successfully installed in time and on budget for our client.
