Derby College required a series of acoustically sealed teaching spaces within the iconic Roundhouse, a Grade II listed building in Derby. The solution needed to create modern, flexible learning environments while respecting the heritage of the building and maintaining its architectural character.
Working alongside Bowmer & Kirkland and Maber Architects, the project called for a design-led approach that would deliver excellent acoustic performance, high-quality finishes and flexibility for future reconfiguration, all with minimal disruption to the live education environment.
The Solution
We developed a fully demountable and relocatable pod solution, creating acoustically sealed teaching spaces that sit comfortably within the historic structure while meeting the demands of a modern educational environment.
Drawing on our expertise in modular partitioning systems, we delivered a design-led solution that combined strong acoustic performance with high-quality architectural finishes. The teaching pods were manufactured off-site and delivered directly to site, helping to minimise installation time, reduce disruption and improve programme certainty.
The design also incorporated electrical and mechanical services within the partitioning system, creating a seamless finish throughout the teaching spaces. The result is a flexible, future-proofed learning environment that can be adapted as educational requirements evolve, while preserving the character and integrity of this landmark heritage building.
