AstraZeneca required a new high-tech sterile manufacturing facility to support the production of next-generation cancer therapies.
Client Brief
The £120 million, three-storey facility needed to accommodate complex aseptic manufacturing processes, highly specialised production equipment and sophisticated sterile environments, while meeting the stringent requirements of pharmaceutical regulatory bodies.
The project demanded a fully integrated approach to design and delivery, with a particular focus on flexibility, allowing critical process equipment and utilities to be commissioned and qualified ahead of overall project completion. The facility also needed to be delivered within an ambitious 18-month design, construction and commissioning programme.
The Solution
We delivered a fully integrated turnkey solution, taking the project from concept and detailed design through construction, commissioning and qualification. Working collaboratively with AstraZeneca through an alliance delivery model, our multidisciplinary team developed highly controlled sterile manufacturing environments tailored to complex aseptic production processes and the integration of state-of-the-art process equipment.
The facility incorporated sophisticated HVAC systems, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling, innovative pure steam and Water for Injection (WFI) generation systems, and high-specification fully vinyl-finished production suites to achieve the stringent environmental and compliance standards required. Full-scale mock-ups and stakeholder reviews were used throughout the design process to optimise layouts, workflows and operational efficiency.
Careful programme sequencing enabled construction, fit-out and utility commissioning activities to run concurrently, allowing critical process equipment and sterile production areas to be commissioned and qualified at an early stage while construction continued elsewhere within the facility. The result was a flagship pharmaceutical manufacturing facility delivered to exacting standards, providing AstraZeneca with a future-ready environment for advanced cancer drug production.
