Refurbishment of AstraZeneca's Tablet Production Facility

Client Brief

AstraZeneca's Macclesfield Campus required the refurbishment of a redundant Tablet Production Facility into a state-of-the-art People Hub. Decommissioned in 2020, the facility was to be transformed to include GMP change facilities for approximately 500 people, non-GMP café and amenity spaces, collaboration areas and a modern office fit-out.

The project aimed to replace the outdated Pharmaceutical Production Building, which accounted for 7.5% of the campus's energy consumption, supporting AstraZeneca's Ambition Zero Carbon programme. The challenge was to maximise the use of the existing building while lowering energy consumption, maintaining GMP and SHE compliance, and delivering the works on a live operational site.

Our Solution

Appointed as tier-one contractor, we delivered the project from design through to construction, commissioning and validation. Working closely with AstraZeneca and the wider project team, we reconfigured the existing facility to create a sustainable, people-focused workplace comprising GMP change facilities, collaboration spaces, meeting rooms, breakout areas, a café and modern office fit-out facilities.

With sustainability at the heart of the project, we upgraded the building fabric and services to reduce energy consumption and support AstraZeneca's carbon reduction objectives. This included improvements to the thermal envelope, roofing, glazing, solar shading, HVAC systems, lighting and water services. A circular economy approach was adopted throughout, retaining and repurposing existing structural elements, finishes and building components wherever possible to minimise waste and reduce embodied carbon.

Delivered through a carefully phased programme, the completed People Hub provides a modern, flexible and energy-efficient environment that enhances operational efficiency while significantly reducing the environmental impact of the former production facility.
