AstraZeneca required a new high-bay warehouse to support automated storage and retrieval operations as part of its manufacturing and logistics infrastructure. The 30m-high, 1,810m² facility was designed to accommodate automated storage and retrieval systems (ASRS) with a storage capacity exceeding 12,000 pallets.
The project required highly controlled environmental conditions, including qualified temperature and humidity control throughout the warehouse, while integrating complex racking systems, automated cranes and inbound and outbound conveyor networks. Safety, operational efficiency and coordination between multiple specialist suppliers were critical to the project's success.
The Solution
We delivered the project from concept and detailed design through to construction and commissioning, acting as both Principal Designer and Principal Contractor. Working closely with the high-bay structure, racking and crane suppliers, we coordinated the delivery of the facility to ensure all structural, mechanical and automation systems were fully integrated.
A bespoke HVAC solution was developed to maintain qualified environmental conditions within the 30m-high storage space. By supplying air from high level and recirculating it at low level, the system achieved effective temperature and humidity control throughout the pallet storage areas while ensuring services remained clear of the automated crane operating zones.
Safety and buildability were key considerations throughout the project. Service modules were prefabricated at ground level before being lifted into position alongside the structural steelwork, reducing work at height and improving installation efficiency. The facility also incorporates an innovative hypoxic fire prevention system integrated within the HVAC design, maintaining a reduced oxygen environment to minimise fire risk while protecting valuable products and automated equipment.
The completed facility provides AstraZeneca with a highly efficient, fully controlled automated warehouse capable of supporting current operations and future growth.
