We responded to an urgent out-of-hours call from a Distribution Network Operator (DNO) to assist in the supply load issue that was causing fuse failures and resulted in a mains cable fault in a residential area.

The investigation revealed an illegal electrical connection leading to a large six-bedroom property suspected to be used as a cannabis factory. We efficiently managed the complex operation, coordinating with the policing and making sure all stakeholders were kept safe, while restoring power to the affected road.

The client wanted us to resolve the supply issue, ensure safety and support law enforcement by collaborating with authorities. We identified and rectified the root cause of the network interface and restored power to the affected road.

To support law enforcement, we provided evidence and technical expertise to assist police investigations.

Our risk assessments made sure that our operatives and stakeholders were protected from potential hazards, activating lone worker devices for added safety.

Through investigating the electrical network, we identified an illegal joint and traced it to a suspect property.

Coordinating with police, we provided a technical assessment and evidence of tampering, aiding law enforcement in securing the site.

By safely disconnecting unauthorized connections and documenting evidence, we prioritised safety and restored power quickly, minimising disruption and positively impacting the community.

Project timeline and key milestones:

  1. Call received: The DNO requested emergency support regarding a supply load issue and suspected illegal connection.
  2. Site mobilisation: Seeka operatives arrived, conducted risk assessments, and set up lone worker protocols.
  3. Investigation and excavation: Seeka identified illegal connections and directed excavation to uncover tampered cables at the property.
  4. Law enforcement engagement: Seeka involved the police to secure and investigate the suspect property and provided technical evidence to coordinate safe entry to the building.
  5. Disconnection and restoration: Seeka safely disconnected illegal and compromised connections and supported the DNO in restoring service to the affected road.

Our health and safety procedures meant no incidents were reported, while ensuring a secure working environment.

Relevant stakeholders followed procedural/regulatory requirements for evidence gathering and site safety.

Adhering to the DNOs budget meant we could efficiently manage within the scope of emergency response costs. Following a timely resolution, we completed all necessary actions to restore power within a single site visit.
