A year into his apprenticeship with M Group, Harry Baker is building his experience as an apprentice Project Manager within Thames Water Capital Delivery.
Now heading into his second year, Harry works across both office and site environments, supporting project delivery while developing his skills and experience along the way.
We caught up with Harry to find out what a typical day looks like, what he’s learnt so far and his advice for anyone considering an apprenticeship with M Group.
Why did you choose M Group?
I chose M Group for its reputation and development opportunities. The people and the variety of work have kept me engaged.
What is your most memorable experience?
The most memorable experience I’ve had since joining M Group was attending and helping to run a careers fair alongside our customer team. This event gave me the opportunity to engage directly with potential new talent, represent the business, and strengthen our partnership with the client. It was rewarding to share our story, showcase the opportunities available, and see first-hand the positive impact we can have in attracting the next generation into our sector.
What does a typical day in your life look like?
My days involve co-ordinating with teams, checking project updates, joining meetings, and supporting project delivery, both on site and in the office.
Juggling priorities and solving problems as projects progress makes the work engaging, especially when you see ideas turn into real results.
What does your flexible working look like?
Hybrid, two days Work from home and three days at different offices, when our sites launch this year will be also site based as well.
How do you work together as a team?
We rely on clear communication, regular update meetings and the use of tools like Teams and Project Online to stay on track across our 19 projects. By working closely with all departments and sharing best practice openly whether office-based, site-based or remote we ensure issues are resolved quickly and lessons are shared. This collaborative approach helps us consistently deliver projects efficiently, safely and to a high standard for our clients.
What might surprise people about working at M Group?
One thing people often find surprising about working here is just how much everyone genuinely wants you to succeed. There’s a real culture of support and encouragement, and colleagues are always willing to take the time to share their knowledge or offer guidance. Being able to talk openly with people from all areas of the business, regardless of their role, not only makes it easier to do your job well but also helps you build strong, lasting connections. This supportive environment means you’re never on your own with a challenge and can always find help or advice to keep progressing, both personally and professionally.
What makes this role unique?
The range of projects, supportive atmosphere, and flexible working make this role unique in the industry.
Who would thrive at M Group?
Someone proactive, adaptable and keen to learn will do really well here.
What would your advice be to future applicants?
Go for it. You’ll find plenty of support and the chance to grow, there’s a real team spirit here.
