What is your role and what do you do day-to-day?

I'm an LE3 Linesman working at M Group Energy. My days can be really varied depending on the project we're working on. Currently, we're based on a project in York. Most of my day-to-day activities involve working at height on lattice towers, changing wires, and lifting platforms. Our chargehand typically sets goals for the day, and as a team, we follow those instructions to get the job done!

How did you get to where you are today in your career?

Before joining M Group Energy, I used to drive a lorry, laying trackway. I was really interested in changing my career path and becoming a linesman. My dad's best friend worked for M Group Energy and introduced me to the Overhead Lines Team. I was referred and recruited as a utility erector and completed my seven weeks of training.

What skills do you need to be able to do your role?

I definitely couldn’t be afraid of heights! I need to be really aware of health and safety practices, I couldn’t do my role if I wasn’t good at working in a team!

We have to communicate in different ways, especially during colder and windy months when we have to use hand signals.

What do you love or enjoy most about working at M Group?

The people. We often work away from home for 2-3 weeks at a time, depending on the project schedule. The friendships among the team makes this so much easier. We stay together in digs, eat out together after work, and enjoy each other's company. I've loved getting to know my team members, who come from different backgrounds and parts of the world!

Top three reasons why a career in the infrastructure sector is rewarding:

  • Making a difference: Knowing that our work supplies essential energy and improves people's lives.
  • Recognition: The appreciation we receive from peers and line managers.
  • Travel: Traveling around the England and Scotland allows me to see many parts of the country from a different point of view.

Highlight of your career and its impact:

For me personally, it was when I  was promoted to an LE3 Linesman. I was new to the industry when I joined as a utility erector, and after my training, I progressed to an LE3 within seven months. This achievement was incredibly positive and rewarding! The industry offers huge progression opportunities, and growth is always encouraged.
