What is your role and what do you do day-to-day?

Hi there! I'm a degree apprentice civil engineer, and I work on the Cambridgeshire Highways design team. My day-to-day tasks involve creating designs for footways, cycleways, and highways using AutoCAD. I also handle important documents related to the design process, such as designer risk assessments, bills of quantities, and environmental checklists.

How did you get to where you are today in your career?

My journey began in college, where I studied engineering and discovered my passion for it. I knew I wanted to build a career in engineering, so I explored various options, including full-time university courses and degree apprenticeships in different sectors. After researching, I found companies offering degree apprentice roles in Civil Engineering, and I realised this was the sector that interested me the most. I applied to M Group Highways, went through the interview process, and got the job (yay!). It's been smooth sailing ever since!

What skills do you need to be able to do your role?

Good communication is a must in my role. As an apprentice, I'm constantly learning new things, so being able to communicate clearly with my mentors and superiors about my understanding and what I need help with is crucial. Teamwork is also important for collaborating with colleagues on projects. Additionally, problem-solving skills and the ability to take initiative are key to succeeding in my work.

What do you love or enjoy most about working at M Group?

I love being part of a great team that offers support and guidance. The positive working environment and the opportunity to socialise with people across the business make my job enjoyable. I'm grateful for my role on the highways design team, where I get to work on interesting projects and develop my skills.

Top three reasons why a career in the infrastructure sector is rewarding:

  • Positive impact on society: Designing new footways and cycleways for communities is incredibly fulfilling.
  • Career growth opportunities: The infrastructure sector offers numerous roles and progression paths.
  • Teamwork and project completion: Working in a team and seeing projects through to construction is hugely rewarding.

Highlight of your career and its impact:

The highlight of my career was getting the job as a degree apprentice. Initially, I was uncertain about my career path and had doubts about succeeding as an engineer. However, I pushed those doubts aside and went for it! Having faith in myself and stepping outside my comfort zone proved that I am capable of success (though I still have a long way to go). Since starting my role, my confidence has grown significantly, and I'm excited for what lies ahead in my career!
