M Group works with Thames Water to protect Heath Lake’s natural environment

The Heath Lake SSSI Enhancement Project in Berkshire, has successfully improved the long-term health of one of the region's most important ecological sites.

Delivered in partnership with Thames Water, the project involved installing six Downstream Defender units to capture sediment before it reaches the lake, alongside civil engineering and environmental protection works.

The team worked closely with residents, Wokingham Borough Council, Friends of Heath Lake and environmental stakeholders, and open communication throughout the project minimised disruption and addressed concerns quickly. This proactive approach helped build trust, maintain strong relationships and ensure the project remained community-focused from start to finish.

The project will provide lasting environmental benefits by improving water quality, enhancing biodiversity and protecting the Heath Lake Site of Special Scientific Interest for future generations.

Alongside the environmental improvements, the team delivered social value through a STEM education programme that engaged 90 local schoolchildren, helping inspire interest in environmental protection, sustainability and engineering careers.

This scheme demonstrates how collaborative infrastructure delivery can create positive outcomes for customers, communities and the environment, while supporting the protection of valuable natural habitats.
