M Group awarded maximum scores and ‘excellent’ rating by Considerate Constructors Scheme

Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) has awarded an ‘excellent’ performance level rating, with maximum scores in all three categories on our Certificate of Performance, for respecting the community, caring for the environment and valuing our workforce at the Botley Bypass in Hampshire.

CCS helps raise construction standards by independently monitoring and scoring sites, driving accountability and improving industry performance.

Its work supports contractors and clients in meeting growing expectations around social value, environmental responsibility, and community engagement. This ensures the core priorities of construction projects are aligned with modern Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) requirements.

The Botley Bypass is a planned road project delivered in collaboration with Hampshire County Council, with a contract value of £48.22 million. The bypass is designed to relieve traffic congestion in Botley village centre, improve air quality and reduce noise and pollution, by providing an alternative route for through traffic. It involves integrated teams constructing a new 1.8km road eastwards from Winchester Street, crossing the River Hamble, and creating a new roundabout at the junction of the A334 and A3051.

During visits to the site, the CCS monitor identified good practice in areas including:

• ·       Meeting environmental challenges with considerable attention to detail, to reduce the impact on the landscape, ecology, local businesses and the community.
• ·       Extensively reusing cut and fill material, to save 22,000 tonnes of graded soil being moved off site.
• ·       Regularly monitoring the River Hamble’s water quality, during bridge construction works.
• ·       Carrying out extensive work with schools and colleges to promote the construction industry.
• ·       Providing extensive support for apprentices and placements on the site.
• ·       Handling mental health matters with care and providing several mental health first aiders on site.
