Situation
One year ago, M Group set out to address carbon emissions and support UK net zero goals, launching the Fleet Decarbonisation Strategy. Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) was identified as a key driver for reducing our fleet’s environmental impact. Fleet-generated CO₂ emissions represented a substantial proportion of our footprint, making change critical. Committing to sustainability helped us lead the way for our industry and reinforced our reputation with clients and communities.
Task
The challenge for M Group was clear, to transition our fleet from conventional diesel to renewable HVO fuel across suitable vehicles and teams. We aimed to establish measurable goals, tracking litres used and CO₂ emissions saved.
To support this, we launched eco-driving campaigns, completed Electric vehicle trials, and done numerous explorations of alternative Fuels, reinforcing sustainable behaviour. Maintaining the same standard of operational performance and cost efficiency remains essential to M Group.
Action
HVO fuel has been systematically introduced across the fleet, with maintenance teams and support vehicles receiving priority. As of March 2026, we have 65 HVO delivery locations, with a mixture of M Group depots and projects locations.
Dedicated eco-driving training and awareness programmes were delivered, empowering staff to make every trip as fuel-efficient and safe as possible. Operational teams shared regular feedback, helping us refine the deployment strategy. Usage and emissions data were reviewed and collated, ensuring accountability and ongoing improvement. Throughout, we prioritised reliability, making sure the transition supported business targets and project delivery.
Result
The environmental impact has been substantial. Our use of HVO’s has cut fleet emissions significantly, with up to 90% less CO₂ produced compared to diesel. Our driver feedback has been positive, citing improved engine performance and satisfaction from contributing to sustainability goals. HVO also proved to be economical, and supporting financial targets. Our eco-driving initiatives have further reduced fuel consumption and supported road safety.
This year we’ve saved an estimated net carbon of 5,168 tonnes and have an annual HVO volume of 2.2 million litres. The strategy is ongoing and we continue to collect data on how we can best support the UK’s net zero goals, reinforcing our commitment to providing essential infrastructure for prestigious clients.
“A year on from our Decarbonisation strategy launch, we’re proving that sustainable choices pay off. With HVO, every litre and every vehicle is helping us deliver essential infrastructure for life.”
