Energy theft and meter tempering poses a serious risk to customers and the public. The more we do to tackle it earlier; the safer customers will be.
To overcome this risk, we’ve identified a solution that is unique to us through our blended in both revenue protection and data analytics.
Our solution shows our knowledge of theft detection and uses our data analytics capability to maximise energy theft and meter tampering identification rates.
To support our client OVO, we share details of our experience and make recommendations around introducing a proactive theft investigation strategy.
Working with our teams across M Group Energy, we’re able to analyse data to identify sites with low consumption that have also seen multiple cases of refused or no access for meter reads.
Using this data, we identified an initial list of 1,600 sites in selected trial areas that we deemed as having a high likelihood of potential theft or faulty meter.
Having identified the sites, OVO have raised jobs on our system, where we then carry out full energy theft investigations and any required meter works to ‘make safe’ in any instance where theft is identified.
We’ve completed 369 cases from this initial list and have identified and made safe 50% where theft/faulty meters were identified.
In the trial of this solution, our client OVO received around £480,000 in incentive scheme returns, loss recovery, industry settlement and future revenue.
