M Group has worked collaboratively with Suffolk County Council to support the installation of EV infrastructure at three highways depots in the county.

Situation

We’ve been supporting our highways client Suffolk County Council (SCC) to prioritise the delivery of a 100% EV fleet, in line with the Council’s decarbonisation strategy.

During the transition to EV, the use of hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) has already been reducing carbon by 90% compared to traditional diesel.

Challenge

In May 2024, SCC asked M Group for support to enable three of its highways depots - Phoenix House, Rougham and Halesworth - to host electric vehicle chargers and infrastructure.

Solution

M Group was appointed as principal contractor on this £2m project.

Using our in-house expertise in delivering EV hubs and kerbside charging, we developed and helped manage a full turnkey solution, in collaboration with SCC, Concertus, UK Power Networks (UKPN), supply chain partners, and hardware and software partners.

Works included installing three UKPN sub-stations, three switch rooms and all associated infrastructure, including the installation of 32 7.4W chargers, 11 dual 200W chargers, 1.76km of ducting, 560m of trenching, and 4,363m of cabling.

Result

The charging infrastructure initially allows up to 43 vehicles to charge at once, with this potentially increasing to 46 vehicles in the future, when more chargers are installed at each depot.

It enables the decarbonisation of SCC and Suffolk Highways’ fleet, reducing SCC’s and M Group’s small van and company vehicle emissions by 97% compared to running an all-diesel fleet.
