From starting as a manager to leading innovation as Head of Digital Solutions, Steve’s journey at M Group shows what’s possible when ambition meets opportunity!
At M Group, we’re not just embracing digital transformation - we’re empowering people to grow their careers every step of the way.
Innovation starts with people, and Steve shared his story as a great example of how passion for technology can lead to a thriving career with us.
How has your career progressed since joining M Group?
I work across all Highways projects and have been doing so for the last five years. When I first started, the initial phase involved understanding the existing digital landscape and identifying areas for advancement.
Since joining M Group, my career has seen significant growth. I started in a managerial role and quickly progressed to Head of Digital Solutions and Innovation. This journey involved leading various high-impact projects like the development of our Innovations Hub and the integration of AI into our daily operations.
Since then, my role has expanded to include oversight of digital initiatives across the organisation. I am proud to say I’ve helped drive our transformation agenda and now chair the group wide AI Working Group. This is where we share and showcase the great work being conducted across M Group.
What keeps you motivated in your role?
In short – AI and technology.
A typical day in my role involves a mix of strategic planning, team collaboration, and project management. It also involves reviewing key performance metrics, addressing urgent issues, and dedicating time to the development and implementation of solutions.
What keeps me motivated is the opportunity to drive digital evolution within M Group. I enjoy collaborating with my team and seeing the tangible impact of our work on improving business processes and customer engagement. One of my biggest achievements is the successful rollout of the Innovations Hub, which has significantly enhanced our ability to manage and implement solutions.
What is the Innovations Hub?
The Innovations Hub provides a central platform for standardising the innovation process, from initial submission to final implementation approval. It encourages innovation and collaboration across M Group Highways contracts and projects, but it is available to anyone who is interested in contributing to and benefiting from innovative solutions upon request
How has AI played a role in your career?
Recently, I was invited to speak at the Procore Construction Summit 2025. I joined industry leaders in London to explore how AI, data, and digital innovation are reshaping the construction landscape.
At the summit, one message rang loud and clear: AI is no longer a concept of the future, it’s the engine of transformation today. The panel discussed real-world applications of AI that are already delivering results. There was a range of conversations from predictive analytics, generative design, and intelligent project management.
Our Highways team takes pride in the fact we are forward-thinkers and try to stay ahead of the curve to deliver the best quality for our clients. Our team is proud to be at the forefront driving innovation that builds a better, more connected future. We know how building strong relationships with clients and stakeholders is crucial for driving successful digital improvement.
If I could tell anyone who is sceptical about AI, it’s important to remember that AI is more than automation. AI empowers our teams to make smarter decisions, faster, and with greater confidence. The next era of construction is about working smarter, not harder – and AI is the catalyst, the future of construction is here, and it is powered by Artificial Intelligence.
I’ve also been working with Iain Janssens, the spearhead for our group MAGI platform, to help grow the capability from an onsite applied level to ensure our people can continue to see the benefits and get the most from the platform.
Even outside of work I am passionate about technology and its potential to solve real-world problems. I enjoy staying updated with the latest advancements in AI and data analytics.
Do you have any unusual skills and what would surprise people if they found this out about you?
The two that surprise most are that I am an avid Kickboxer heading towards a black belt. I also have a few self-taught circus skills including juggling and diablo (a juggling prop that looks like an hourglass-shaped yo-yo).
My guilty pleasure is Lego; I’ve always loved building and creating things from the ground up and LEGO gives me the perfect outlet for that passion. Sets like the Technic Excavator and Modular buildings combine intricate design with real-world engineering, letting me explore creativity through construction. It’s not just a hobby it’s how I unwind, think differently, and let my mind wander.
My family, friends, and colleagues describe me as ambitious, dedicated and supportive. I think innovation and ambition go hand in hand – it is the value I relate to most.
Have you been involved in any social value works, or completed any additional training?
I have been involved in various social value initiatives including supporting local schools with STEM events and working with organisations to provide job opportunities for disadvantaged groups. I am also an active member of the Highways Women's and LGBTQ+ networks.
Thank you, Steve, for sharing your journey and for your outstanding contributions to both our communities and the ENABLE initiatives within Highways. We’re proud to welcome you to our M Group Hall of Fame!
