We're celebrating National Graduate Week 2025 by interviewing some of our Graduates to see how their career is progressing with M Group
What is your job title and what do you mainly do in your role?
I’m a Graduate Estimator within the Work Winning Team at MGroup Highways. In my role I prepare cost estimates for infrastructure projects. This involves analysing drawings, specifications, and tender documents to interpret client needs and modelling the cost of these so that we can deliver a dynamic and sustainable service.
What projects are you currently working on at the moment?
Currently, I’m involved in pricing a few tenders within the highways sector – the bulk of these being Term Maintenance Contracts (TMCs) for local government bodies. As the foremost provider of local highway maintenance in the UK we manage over 50,000km of roads as well as over 350,000 streetlights, there is always a stream of new and interesting work available to us as no two contracts are the same.
What do you like best about working at M Group?
I think the part I most enjoy is the collaborative environment and the opportunity to work on projects that have a tangible impact on the world we live in. Ultimately, I'm part of a great team which places a strong focus on personal development and innovation; creating the chance to take on responsibility which has helped me grow quickly.
How would you describe the company culture and environment at M Group?
The culture at M Group is inclusive, professional, and growth orientated. The emphasis on teamwork and continuous improvement is particularly notable and I am encouraged to speak up in meetings and contribute ideas whenever possible – the vast majority of the time things are done in a certain way for a reason, but every now and again you will pick up on something that is worth a closer look!
How does the graduate program support your professional development for your career?
There is a definite focus on personal and professional development at M Group. In particular there has been an emphasis on mentoring and career guidance that has put me in a good position to strengthen my skills and progress in the medium to long term. This has come in the form of the chance to pursue a Masters Degree in Quantity Surveying and Commercial Management at an institution recognised by the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).
What is the biggest lesson you've learned on the graduate scheme?
One challenge was getting to grips with the estimating software as well as the industry specific terminology. Thankfully through the support and experience of my colleagues, as well as their willingness to answer my incessant questions, this was overcome early on.
What is your advice for any university student who’s interested in applying for a graduate programme at M Group?
The biggest lesson I have learnt has been the importance of my own voice. Early on, I realised that speaking up to share ideas, ask questions or offer feedback not only helps me grow but also adds value to the team.
