At M Group, we are committed to giving opportunities to people at the very start of their careers, as well as those who have chosen to change direction and pursue a new path, therefore, our graduate programmes are more than a first step into the workplace — they are a launchpad for personal and professional growth.

We provide talented individuals with the tools, real-world experience, and dedicated support they need to thrive, offering the chance to work on meaningful projects that shape communities. From day one, our graduates are encouraged to take on responsibility, develop new skills, and turn their potential into real achievement.

Follow Lucy’s inspiring journey with us! From her first days as a graduate full of ambition and curiosity, to becoming a confident Site Engineer making a real difference.

What was your experience like when starting your current job?

This is my first full-time role since leaving university, so I have dedicated a lot of time to learning the skills and processes required to excel in my position.

I began in 2021 as a student engineer in Rail and Aviation during my placement year. My first project was a bridge refurbishment, which was also my first real experience in the industry. Straight away, I knew it was the right career path for me.

After graduating from university in 2023, I returned to Highways as a graduate site engineer, working on a high-street regeneration project. During this project, I collaborated with the client on some major redesign work which, as a result, led to my promotion to Site Engineer in November 2024.

During my onboarding process, I had regular catch-ups with my line manager to ensure I felt comfortable and confident in both the project and my role. At first, being fully qualified and taking on a new level of responsibility was a little daunting, but from day one, my site team were incredibly supportive, making it much easier for me to settle in.

What keeps you motivated in your role?

I enjoy the fast pace and variety of tasks. I never know exactly what each day will bring, and that’s exciting.

One of my proudest career achievements so far has been successfully collaborating with the client to redesign the kerb lines on the Fisherton Gateway project, work which ultimately contributed to my promotion. Seeing my design brought to life on site was hugely rewarding and has motivated me to continue striving for excellence.

Day-to-day, I am responsible for producing and issuing permits to break ground for the works on site and communicating these to the operatives to ensure they are happy with and understand the work required. My role generally involves a lot of decision-making, as whenever an issue arises that deviates from the works information, it is my responsibility to liaise with the client and identify a solution to keep the project on schedule and within budget.

Since joining, I have completed CAT & Genny training to support permit issuing, as well as a setting out and surveying course to enhance my practical engineering skills. I have also undertaken various health and safety courses, including the Site Supervision Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS), a two-day course designed to help site supervisors understand their health, safety, welfare, environmental, and legal responsibilities.

If I could give one piece of advice to someone starting in a role like mine, it would be to be open to learning and developing your skills. Be confident in yourself, don’t be afraid to ask questions, and take responsibility for your own career progression.

Have you been involved in any social value, volunteering or charity work?

I am a member of the Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA) NextGen, a group of like-minded young professionals working to promote the construction industry to the next generation.

M Group is a CECA member, so it’s a great way for me to represent Highways. We attend careers fairs, schools, and youth groups such as Brownies, with the aim of getting children and teenagers to think about potential careers in the infrastructure industry.

It has been incredibly rewarding to talk to them and share more about the career and industry that I love.

Outside of work, what are you most passionate about?

I love to travel and see as much of the world as I can. Whether it’s a short weekend break or a longer adventure, such as travelling up the east coast of Australia, I enjoy visiting new places and experiencing new things.

Congratulations, Lucy! You’ve made an exceptional start to your career with us, and we’re excited to see you continue to grow and excel as a Site Engineer. And thank you for sharing your experiences and insights, they inspire others on their own journeys!
