What have you learnt since joining M Group?
Since starting this job almost three years ago, I have completed an Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) Managing safety course. I’ve also done a PRINCE2 (Projects IN Controlled Environments) course. These courses helped me develop fundamental communication, leadership, planning, and risk management skills.
I work nationwide, so I visit suppliers to manage and make sure our vehicles are being built to our specs and meet our standards. I also visit contractors and help them work through any problems they are having with machinery or equipment. I previously worked in the engineering department for a large fleet operator. Plant is something that I’m still developing as time goes on.
If you could pass on one piece of advice to someone thinking about starting a role like yours, what would it be?
Don’t be afraid to challenge ‘historical’ working practices.
I strongly believe that just because "we have always done it that way" is not the way forward. We have to continually be questioning, evaluating and improving. I try to dedicate time for innovation or coming up with ways to improve what we already do. I like being challenged and challenging how things are being done, there's a lot of satisfaction to be gained by being the one to solve a problem that keeps reappearing.
Which of our four new values (Responsibility, Open, Together, Ambitious) do you most closely relate to?
Naturally, they are all important, but I do think ‘together’ is the one I associate most with my role. Like with my caving, as an engineer, I also work collaboratively with multiple departments, contracts and suppliers, etc.
I always say: “You could make a decision optimal to your own objectives, but that could be detrimental to the success of other teams in the business.”
Basically, meaning if you make a decision that only helps you, it could hinder the progress of someone else, so being open about your thinking and working together allows everybody to move in the same direction.
What are you most passionate about? Do you have any unusual skills that would surprise people?
A caving trip is my favourite way to spend a Saturday. I meet up with others at the club hut, decide where we are going and set off – this isn't just getting stuck underground in a dark passage as many people would believe!
It doesn't matter if you are with somebody you have caved with 100 times or it’s somebody you met that morning, when you are in a cave, you are all part of the team helping each other. We all work together to reach the sump (the lowest part of the cave where the water level is) and work together to get back out safely. It’s an incredible sport where you meet such an array of different people, I love being part of a larger community that has people from all over the world.
Because of my love for caving, I have learnt how to rig the ropework in caves. I have also recently completed a basic single rope rescue course - this means I can help people who might get into difficulty.
I have caved all over England and Wales, I'm going caving in Mallorca soon and would love to visit some caves in America too.
