M Group Energy supported our client, Be.EV, one of the fastest growing public electric vehicles charging network in the UK, in the design and construction of the largest EV Charging Hub in Shropshire.
The site is located at the Telford shopping centre in Shropshire, with over 100,000 visitors each day. The project took eight weeks from the initial feasibility assessment to completion with a total value of £0.5 million. The scope of works included acting as principal designer and contractor of the new EV charging Hub.
Task
For construction M Group acted as the Principal Designer and Principal Contractor undertaking responsibility for CDM and all permits, licences and closures.
As part of the project, we improved the condition of the current car park, resurfacing the charging hub area to ensure longer-lasting improvements to the space.
The team successfully installed a new grid connection onto the site near a pedestrian route. As part of our works, we to put in place temporary measures to ensure the footpath remained open and did not impact users or local businesses.
We worked with the local shopping centre and businesses to ensure our works and deliveries were co-ordinated with the shopping centre operations, so as not to impact their business activities. This included minimising our storage space with ‘just in time’ deliveries and out of hours work where necessary.
Action
We worked closely with Be.EV and the site landlord to agree a layout and budget perspective. We met their budget and programme requirements, while delivering on sustainability objectives through:
- New package substation and point of connection – part of the build included procuring and installing a new 1.5MVA packaged substation. This has reduced installation time, space and cost compared to traditional substations. We also installed a Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) enclosure.
- Introducing plastic chambers for chargers – The feeder pillar and charger bases were fabricated offsite and sourced from 100% recycled plastic. This reduces health & safety risk onsite associated with pouring concrete and delivered time efficiency, reducing the time to create a new chamber from four days to one.
Result
We effectively delivered the charging hub on time and in budget, while maintaining high standards of sustainability, safety and quality. Throughout the project, we received positive public feedback, harnessed through continuous conversations with stakeholders and our construction manager to reduce disruption.
As of August 2025, this project marks the highest number of bay hubs delivered by M Group.
