Client: Network Rail

Duration: January- October 2025

M Group Rail & Aviation has completed the restoration of a major heritage site at Bristol Temple Meads station, delivered in partnership with Network Rail, as part of the CP7 Wales and Western framework.

This work is part of the station’s most ambitious regeneration in over a century, safeguarding one of the UK’s iconic rail landmarks for generations to come.

Our team focused on strengthening the floor and repairing the roof of the Grade I listed passenger shed, a structure originally designed by engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

Over time, water ingress had threatened the fabric of the building. Our works have ensured a watertight structure that is brighter, safer and more welcoming for passengers.

Working with Network Rail’s heritage manager and stakeholders, our team navigated the complexity of refurbishing a listed structure, carefully preserving historic elements while using modern engineering solutions.

During the process, we uncovered original structural components once used for steam locomotives, adapting them for contemporary use.

While undertaking work, our team also created and took part in social value opportunities to give back to the local community, including monthly litter picking and repurposing hoarding timber to create planters for surrounding businesses. We’ve supported local businesses impacted by our works ensuring relationships have been managed and as minimal interference to business as usual as possible.

We’ve ensured the heritage of the site has been looked after while meeting the operational needs of a busy, live railway station.

“This project highlights our expertise in heritage-sensitive construction, working collaboratively with our client to preserve and enhance landmarks while giving back to the communities where we work.”
