As part of the Caledonian Water Alliance, a joint venture alliance between AECOM and M Group Water, we’ve made some significant progress on our project in the northeast near Ellon, on behalf of Scottish Water.
Working alongside our supply chain partner, AG Wilson, our team is replacing an existing asset and upsizing the original 300mm diameter PVC trunk main that was laid in 1973. By replacing it with a 560mm PE pipe, we’re helping to improve reliability and increase capacity in the water network, supporting further growth within the Ellon corridor.
This phase of the project, which marks a £38 million investment by Scottish Water, was originally programmed to run for two years, starting in September 2024. We’re currently aiming to have water into supply in June 2026. By the end of phase two, 18km of pipe in total will have been laid.
David Pascall, CWA Project Manager, said: “Progress to date on this project has been excellent. To date 12km of pipe has been laid against 7.5km planned at this stage.
“We’ve been very lucky with the weather, and we’ve built up a good relationship with the landowners and agents and have all wayleave fencing up for the remaining pipeline. In some areas where we’ve completed the pipe installation, the farmers have taken back the land and started to work it again.
“Where we can, we’re reinstating the land as we progress, in order to hand land back as early as possible, maintaining the relationship we have with the landowners.”
The project route contains six areas of directional drill crossings, which includes one under the Water of Cruden and two under the A90, which will prevent significant disruption to the local community.
