Recently, our M Group Highways partnership with Suffolk County Council celebrated its two-year anniversary.

Since 1 October 2023, we’ve repaired over 36,000 potholes, cleaned more than 236,000 gullies and implemented significant infrastructure improvements.

A large part of the contract is the repair of highway defects. Since the contract began, Suffolk Highways has repaired 36,898 potholes and 6,772 footway defects across the county.

Innovation has played a key role, with technologies such as the Dragon Patcher and Roadmender trialled as part of a pothole prevention programme. These have enabled defects to be repaired before larger potholes form, helping to address potential issues early.

Our continued commitment to safer, greener highways has been demonstrated by our response to more than 7,000 emergencies since the contract began. This included efforts during Storm Babet, which saw crews remove over 50 tonnes of debris from the highway and pump away 2.5 million litres of water from carriageways.

Beyond its day-to-day activity, Suffolk Highways has completed a wide range of infrastructure improvements in the past two years, including an ambitious £10m programme of resurfacing to around 250 local roads.

We have also constructed a range of structures and roads, such as Europa Way, a vital new link road in Ipswich, which has improved connectivity and eased traffic flow for businesses, residents and highway users. The new contract has delivered a range of new public rights of way bridges, including the Pippins Footbridge in the Gipping Valley, Blyth Bridge in Halesworth and Place Farm Bridge in Bardwell.

As part of the partnership, we continue to build a positive legacy for Suffolk, contributing to the communities we work within. So far, we have provided hundreds of staff volunteering hours, raised significant donations for local charities, recruited 16 apprentices, and prioritised the use of Suffolk based businesses where possible.

Paul West, Suffolk County Council’s Cabinet Member for Operational Highways and Flooding, said: “The work delivered so far has improved the safety and resilience of our highways network, while also supporting local jobs and making sure we deliver on our environmental commitments.”
