Before the end of 2024, we reached a significant milestone on our McDonald Road Waste Water Pumping Station project, with the removal of the nine-tonne screw pump from the station.

An ongoing upgrade on behalf of Scottish Water, this multimillion-pound refurbishment involves the replacement of two large diameter screw pumps, which are underground in the centre of Edinburgh, Scotland. Moving millions of litres of wastewater every day across the capital, the major refurbishment of the pumps, which have been in operation for over 50 years, is essential to making sure they remain efficient and reliable.

The first ‘storm screw’, which operates during periods of high-water flows and in storm conditions, was removed in December 2023 and replaced with a new one in April 2024.

At the end of October 2024, the ‘foul screw’ was successful removed, and the final phase will involve the installation of the newly fabricated foul screw this year.

Throughout the project, we’ve engaged with the local community to make sure they’re aware of the essential upgrade to the sewer network, while also providing up-to-date information on its progress and opportunities for the public to voice any concerns.

This project has combined the skills of several of our M Group Water capabilities. By working together, we were able to create a bespoke isolation design and installation method, capable of being installed on a live network, leading to our engineers being able to complete the mechanical and civil removal works necessary to free and remove the damage screw pumps.

Jonathan Higgins, MEICA Business Director, said: “A complex project being undertaken by a highly skilled team of MEICA specialists, whose experience and knowledge have helped minimise disruptions to Scottish Water operations and the local community.

The team have reached a significant milestone as a result of their dedication and careful planning to refurbish two screw pumps that will soon be fully operational.”
