We’ve worked closely with our long-time partner AtkinsRéalis and Wiltshire Council to deliver a major regeneration project in Trowbridge, funded by the Government’s Future High Streets Fund.
Starting in May 2023, the project has regenerated the historic town centre, making it more vibrant, accessible and sustainable for residents and visitors.
By bringing together AtkinsRéalis design expertise with our delivery capabilities, we developed a programme built on a shared vision of delivering lasting community benefits. Our teams worked side-by-side, met every two weeks, and shared facilities to keep communication fast and decisions quick.
This approach helped us solve problems creatively, manage last‑minute design changes, and keep costs under control.
“We all worked as one team to solve design challenges- from adapting drainage layouts to improving accessibility and avoiding underground utilities. This teamwork meant safe, cost‑effective solutions.” Liam Hancock, Engineer, AtkinsRéalis
Accessibility was a key focus of the regeneration, transforming Trowbridge into a more inclusive and welcoming environment. To do this we introduced tactile paving, dropped kerbs and better transport links, as well as wider footpaths and seating for older residents or those with mobility challenges.
Improved and additional street lighting also supported safety, creating a better atmosphere for residents.
We made sure the project was sustainable through innovative methods and resource efficiency. This included:
· Pipelining for drainage.
- Reusing materials, refurbishing old bollards and benches.
- Using reclaimed and locally sourced stone to match the town’s character.
- Adding greenery and landscaping to boost biodiversity and reduce environmental impact.
The collaborative approach extended beyond the core project partners to positively impact the wider community. Wiltshire Council apprentices gained valuable on‑site experience, helping to close skills gaps in construction and highways.
Community feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Local businesses, including Peppers Hair & Beauty Salon, Dorothy House and Parade House, praised the project’s contribution to vibrancy, accessibility and overall quality of life. Stakeholder satisfaction was prioritised from the outset through extensive early engagement and practical measures, such as temporary pathways and adjusted work schedules, which ensured minimal disruption and maintained business access.
“Today the barriers were removed and it’s looking amazing!” – Peppers Hair and Beauty Salon
Despite the complexity, the project finished on time and within budget. The regenerated area now promotes green travel options and increases daytime footfall.
Every phase was completed without delays, showing what true collaboration can achieve.
“We all bounce ideas back and forth and find solutions quickly. The knowledge across the team means we can keep delivering high‑quality projects for Wiltshire Council.” – Andrew Pothecary, Contract Manager, M Group Highways.
