As part of the Caledonia Water Alliance (CWA), a joint venue alliance between AECOM and M Group Water, we’ve completed the first phase of the Improving Urban Waters (IUW) programme in Stewarton, to support the infrastructure for the towns waste water.

The work, which will help alleviate sewer flooding, improve waste water services and help to protect the local environment, is just one of the several projects being delivered by the alliance as part of Scottish Water’s £500 million IUW route map.

Our community engagement throughout phase one saw our team receiving friendship bracelets from the children of Nether Robertland Early Childhood Centre. The pupils had made friendship bracelets for ambassadors of the community, and our team were delighted to gifted by the children, during a special visit to the site.

Bob Borland, General Foreman, said: “It was very nice for the local nursery to approach the site team and provide this special gift. It is not often we receive such as nice friendly approach, and we would welcome back the children to see the diggers as we progress our work.”

Nether Robertland, Early Childhood Centre, said: “The children are part of a leadership team which is called ‘Community Kids’, which aims to involve the local community in the life of Nether Robertland Early Childhood Centre. The children met in October and came up with the idea of making "Diamond bracelets" for their identified ambassadors of Stewarton. All children in the centre have been making bracelets in the month of December and were excited to start handing them out as a kind thought.”

Throughout phase one, the team engaged with the community through drop-in events, providing information for upcoming projects.

Local residents and members from the Scottish Water team attended, providing a platform to alleviate any concerns around the programme.

Paul Milligan, CWA Communication Manager, said: Further to the success of the first event held in February 2024, this second event allowed the community to find out how we had developed up designs further and also find out key dates of proposed road closures in 2025”.

Scott Muir, CWA Project Manager, said: “The event went very well with many customers that attended talking about flooding issues that have been going on for over 15 years."

Following the completion of phase one, the team have begun to prepare for phase two. The team will continue to engage with the community throughout.
