Dyer & Butler has worked alongside our client, Mitie, to complete the resurfacing of the Alpha Loop Taxiway at RAF Mount Pleasant, a mixed civilian and military airfield located 8,000 miles from the UK on the Falkland Islands.

The Alpha taxiway allows aircraft to turn at the eastern end of the runway. Working for Mitie and the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO), the Dyer & Butler team worked with Power Plane and Associated Asphalt, managing challenging conditions to complete the 9,400m2 resurfacing project in less than a month.

The scope of works saw the team remove 3,500 tonnes of concrete and replace it with a PMB stone mastic asphalt, and necessitated transporting an asphalt batching plant from the UK and erecting it close to the Mount Pleasant Airfield. Works were completed around the flying programme, ensuring minimal impact to airfield operations.

Throughout the project, local companies were used where possible, supporting the Falkland Islands’ economy.

The work undertaken will support the critical operations on site for years to come, allowing aircraft to move safely on the taxiway.
