As part of the Caledonia Water Alliance (CWA), a joint venture between AECOM and M Group Water, we’ve worked alongside our contractor, APL Construction, to successfully tie in the new sewer pipe bridge replacement at Carstairs Junction.
The £3.1 million investment for Scottish Water will provide long term resilience for the sewer network. Through the project, 413 Metres of 300 diameter pipe and 40 new steelwork piers have successfully been replaced.
The section of the pipe bridge that goes underneath the Glasgow to London railway line also needed to be replaced. The railway line was originally built by the Caledonia Railway in 1848 and is now one of Scotland's most critical rail junctions on the West Coast Main Line. Our teams worked with Network Rail and four landowners, to consider a plan which would ensure the smooth delivery of the project.
CWA Project Manager Scott Hendry said “We’re pleased to deliver this much-needed project for Scottish Water near this vital railway infrastructure. The existing pipe was in poor condition and in need of urgent replacement. This project presented some significant challenges regarding access to undertake the site works.
“The team have done an excellent job in working together with our contractor APL to deliver this much needed project to help provide resilience and protect the local environment for years to come.”
