The public electric vehicle (EV) charging project is a significant step in supporting Brighton & Hove City Council’s target of net zero by 2030.
Led by char.gy, a leading electric vehicle (EV) charge point operator and delivered with funds from the Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) scheme, this framework aims to make electric driving more accessible and affordable for Brighton and Hove residents and visitors.
The framework will see M Group Highways acting as delivery partner, responsible for site surveys, installation and ongoing maintenance of over 6,000 charging points across the area, which will primarily be installed into existing streetlight infrastructure to reduce street clutter and disruption.
The introduction of robust charging infrastructure will not only enhance the accessibility of EV but also contribute to a cleaner, greener environment.
Councillor Trevor Muten, Cabinet member for Transport and City Infrastructure at Brighton & Hove City Council, said: “Brighton & Hove is leading the way in providing our residents, visitors and businesses with the infrastructure needed for the growing number of electric vehicle users.
“I’m looking forward to seeing more chargepoints, delivered in partnership with Char.gy and M Group Highways, brought to the doorsteps of our communities across the city, helping us to provide clean, affordable and low carbon transport for people in Brighton & Hove.”
John Lewis, CEO at char.gy, said: “By delivering reliable, affordable on-street charging at scale, and using existing streetlight infrastructure, we’re making it easier for Brighton and Hove's residents and visitors to switch to electric without adding disruption to the streets.
Working with M Group Highways as our delivery partner gives us the expertise and capacity to roll out high-quality charging infrastructure that communities can depend on, both now and as demand continues to grow.”
Simon Woodford, Street Lighting Director Business Director at M Group Highways, said: “We’re really looking forward to working with char.gy. This partnership reinforces the importance of collaboration within the industry and represents a significant investment into the future of sustainable transport.
“As the demand for EV charging continues to grow, we look forward to using our expertise in high-quality installations to make sustainable journeys a reality for communities across the UK.”
Char.gy and M Group look forward to working together in shared goal to support Brighton & Hove’s ambitious sustainability goals.
