The Dunkeld design and build project, on behalf of SGN is now in its final stages before completion. We were selected to install a new 15.5km immediate (IP) gas pipeline from Birnam to Logierait, 12km x 250mm HDPE, 3.5lm x180mm HDPE.
The existing 100MB high pressure (HP) pipeline from Potcairngreen to Logierait was identified as being at risk of watercourse erosion along the banks of the River Tay, which may have had detrimental effects to the local area and downstream gas network.
The works were carried out as part of SGN’s programme of critical infrastructure works to make sure ongoing gas supply reached the Perthshire region.
Due to the location and scope of works, our team were faced with a variety of challenges which needed close collaboration with local stakeholders including the local community, council, highways authority and ecologists.
As principal contractor, we worked with SGN to design the temporary works and reroute large parts of the pipeline as a flexible route.
We’ve successfully delivered the project to agreed timescales and to a high standard, while maintaining good relationships with all stakeholders through clear and consistent communication. Our project team collaborated with the SGN team to deliver:
- 5.5km IP gas pipeline
- Steel welding of valves
- Major temporary and permanent works
- 15km of digging and approximately 0.5km of HDD
- Main road closures
- Special crossings around Network Rail tunnel
- Detail design of all temporary and permanent works.
We were responsible for the design and build of all temporary works for the project. There were several temporary works required in various areas, including deep excavations around a Network Rail tunnel, fencing, security, traffic management and tree felling.
Effective stakeholder management was crucial for our project’s success, guided by tight controls within our Business Management System (BMS). We created a project consent tracker to document interactions, permits, environmental considerations, and stakeholder requirements, ensuring organised communication.
We also gave back to the local community through initiatives including providing new flowerbeds for local schools and donating removed trees as firewood and we prioritised local businesses, renting community offices.
We protected the environment through ongoing studies and innovative horizontal drilling, minimising ecological impact. Working with local authorities, we adjusted traffic flows and scheduled nighttime work to reduce disruptions, ensuring local events and attractions, like the Highland Games and the River Tay, remained unaffected.
